The Challenge

Bipolar UK is the national charity supporting people affected by bipolar disorder and their families. At a pivotal moment of growth, the organisation needed to sharpen its services strategy and clarify where it could scale its impact sustainably.

The charity knew its peer support was valued, but faced questions familiar to many ambitious organisations. How do you scale without losing what makes you special? Where should you focus, stop or invest? How do you future-proof services in a system under increasing pressure?

The wider mental health landscape was fragmented and changing fast. Demand was rising, care was decentralising, and charities were being asked to fill growing gaps. Bipolar UK wanted to move from reactive service delivery to a more intentional, strategic service portfolio.

The Solution

We partnered with Bipolar UK to move from complexity to clarity.

We started by immersing ourselves in the organisation’s data, speaking to leaders and frontline teams, and mapping the wider support ecosystem identifying where statutory services struggle, where duplication exists, and where Bipolar UK’s role is uniquely valuable. This gave the leadership team a shared, evidence-based view of the landscape that rarely exists internally.

We then went deep into community insight, qualitative interviews and survey work with people affected by bipolar revealed consistent patterns: support is often crisis-led rather than preventative, ongoing self-management support is limited, peer connection is powerful but needs to evolve, and families and carers carry significant, under-supported responsibility.

Alongside current insight, we explored the broader forces shaping the next decade of mental health support, NHS capacity pressures, care shifting into communities, growing inequalities in access and outcomes, and the gradual integration of digital tools. This ensured the strategy responded not only to today’s needs but to the structural pressures ahead.

The Impact

We delivered a clear articulation of Bipolar UK’s role within a complex ecosystem, a prioritised service portfolio, a strategic framework aligning impact, services and future ambition, and a roadmap to strengthen funding cases and long-term growth.

Most importantly, we helped the team move from “we could do everything” to “this is where we will have the greatest impact.”

Bipolar UK left the process able to make confident strategic decisions about where to invest, with a stronger case for multi-year funding, aligned trustees and senior leaders, and a clear path from reactive service growth to intentional portfolio design.

The result was not just a services review, but stronger organisational confidence about where to play, how to grow, and why it matters.
